How We Review POS Systems

Last updated:

We've reviewed 35+ POS systems, spending about 4 to 10 hours on each, and every review tells you how much access we had.

Our Standards

Independence. POS vendors, advertisers and partners can't buy a favorable review, a guaranteed ranking, a higher score or the removal of legitimate criticism. CanComCo, which runs this site, earns commissions from some POS providers; those commissions don't decide our scores. See our Editorial Policy and Affiliate Disclosure.

Hands-on testing. We follow a structured evaluation, not a surface-level feature comparison. We don't call a POS system “hands-on tested” unless we've used the software ourselves.

Transparency. Every review states the level of access we had. When we can't verify a claim, we label it as unverified, vendor-provided, estimated or subject to confirmation.

The three access levels

  • Hands-on tested

Hands-on testing: the reviewer uses the live product or a full working trial account.

  • Demo or sandbox

Demo or sandbox testing: the reviewer evaluates the system through a vendor-provided demo, test environment or guided product demonstration.

  • Research-based

Research-based review: when direct access isn't available, the review draws on official documentation, pricing pages, product demonstrations, support resources, verified third-party information and other reliable sources.

The Testing Process

Each review takes about 4 to 10 hours, depending on how complex the platform is.

  1. Set the access level. We test hands-on, through a demo or sandbox, or from research, and the review states which.
  2. Research the product. We read the vendor's website, product documentation, help center and support resources.
  3. Verify the features. We check each feature we describe against the product itself or its official documentation.
  4. Analyze the pricing. We check subscription costs, transaction fees, hardware, contracts and add-ons against official pricing pages and terms.
  5. Compare with competitors. We measure the system against competing POS solutions.
  6. Score it. We rate the system on eight weighted criteria (below).
  7. Fact-check before publishing. We check pricing, fees, hardware, integrations, contract terms, availability and major features against current official sources.

When Reviews Are Updated

We aim to re-check every major POS review at least once every six months. We may update a review sooner when something significant changes:

  • Pricing or transaction fees
  • Product features or payment processing options
  • Hardware or integrations
  • Terms or contracts
  • Supported countries
  • Tax or compliance features
  • Company ownership or product availability

Each review shows a “Reviewed by” field and a “Last Updated” date.

Getting Something Wrong

We aim to investigate a reported factual error within 2 business days and to correct a confirmed material error within 3 business days in most cases. We note material corrections on the affected page and list them in our Corrections Log.
